Sustainable packaging has become one of the biggest conversations in beauty over the past few years. While ingredients and formulations still matter hugely to consumers, packaging is now playing an increasingly important role in how brands are viewed and how products are purchased.
Refill systems, recyclable materials, biodegradable packaging and plastic-free products are becoming far more common across skincare, haircare and wellbeing, with many beauty brands rethinking not just what goes into a product, but how it is made, packaged and eventually disposed of.
The Global Green Beauty Awards have also seen a noticeable rise in brands focusing on packaging innovation across multiple categories.
Among last year’s winners was INIKA Organic, which received Gold for Best Recyclable Packaging, while Floral Street picked up Gold for Most Sustainable Packaging for its perfume mists.
Packaging innovation is also becoming increasingly important within professional haircare. Malibu C received Silver for Most Sustainable Packaging and Gold for Best Packaging Using Recycled Materials for its EcoBlu® sustainable packaging with enhanced bio-degradation. Malibu C’s EcoBlu® sustainable packaging was recognised for its focus on reducing environmental impact across both packaging and product development. The brand has highlighted efforts including the use of post-consumer recycled materials, vegan plant-derived ingredients and reducing water usage throughout manufacturing, as more professional haircare brands look at ways to reduce environmental impact across both packaging and manufacturing
Kinvara was also recognised in the awards for its Absolute Cleansing Oil Refill Pouch, which received Highly Commended in the Best Re-Fillable Product category. The refill pouch was recognised for helping reduce packaging waste while still offering consumers a practical everyday skincare format, the refill pouch was recognised for helping reduce packaging waste while still offering consumers a practical everyday skincare format, as more beauty brands move towards refillable packaging.
Meanwhile, refillable beauty continues to grow across both luxury and independent brands. Tata Harper received Gold for Best Re-Fillable Product for its Water-Lock Moisturizer, a product designed to combine hydration and sustainability within one refillable system. The moisturiser uses ingredients including sugar carbohydrates, beet root extract and macro hyaluronic acid to help leave skin feeling hydrated, soft and balanced, while the refill design allows consumers to reuse the outer jar and reduce overall packaging waste. The category reflected the growing demand for products that combine performance, convenience and more sustainable packaging solutions.
Plastic-free beauty also continues to gain momentum. Brands such as Dook were recognised for products including shampoo bars and salt soaps, formats which have become increasingly popular with consumers looking to reduce packaging waste within their everyday routines.
What is particularly interesting is how broad sustainable packaging has now become within the beauty industry. It is no longer limited to one type of product or one area of beauty. From aluminium packaging and refill pouches through to biodegradable materials and plastic-free formats, brands are approaching sustainability in very different ways.
As consumers continue to pay closer attention to packaging and environmental impact, sustainable beauty is likely to remain one of the industry’s biggest areas of innovation heading into 2026.
Entries for the Global Green Beauty Awards 2026 are now officially open, with categories covering skincare, haircare, fragrance, wellbeing, supplements, beauty tools and sustainable beauty.
