We thought we would look into and explore what is happening to the beauty industry during the coronavirus pandemic. There's some pretty scary stats out there about the economy in general - four days ago the BBC reported that the economy has drunk a record 20.4% in April. The big question in our industry though is, how is the beauty and cosmetics industry being affected?
Firstly - some products are not only on the up, but are spiralling into the stratospheres of success - bars of soap, liquid soap, hand sanitiser and disinfecting products. We have also seen beauty brands help out - one of our winner's in the UK 2020 Global Makeup Awards, the L'Occitane Group, has manufactured over 70,000 litres of hand sanitizer for health officials.
As spas and salons have been forced to shut by government mandate (Treatwell is currently suspended), we have also seen a huge rise in home treatments. That includes home face masks, box hair dye kits and home hair removal kits. At this point we of course want to mention our favourite hair removal kit, and winner in the UK 2020 Global Makeup Awards - No Mo-Stache's No Mo-Unibrow.
On the other hand, the beauty events calendar has been thrown into the air. Beauty Awards with galas have had to cancel the galas of course and stream them online or to announce them online. Beauty Expos such as Bologna's Cosmoprof has been postponed until next year and will be Spring 2021. People are also looking after themselves more in lockdown - we are seeing 40% of high income earners looking to actively manage their stress, including with at home spa treatments.
Brands have been forced online, and have been selling through their website, facebook, Instagram and other online channels. Many, who haven't been able to adapt to selling online, have ceased business for months, It's not all doom and gloom for the beauty industry though. Euromonitor international predicts that the beauty sector, both luxury and non luxury, is set to fall by just 2% this year. It is a negative fall, but it could have been much worse. For example, comparatively, the luxury goods market will fall 18% this year globally. As a side note, Switzerland is seeing a fall of 25% for the luxury goods market, which is a whopping fall of 1 in 4. We are also expected to see an economic bounce back, and we are hoping some consumers have experimented with new beauty brands during lockdown.
What is the Global Makeup Awards and Global Green Beauty Awards seeing within the beauty and cosmetics industry?
In addition to the above - we thought you might want to see closer to home our own experiences and expectations for the beauty industry during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Of course we have seen business struggle with warehouse issues, particularly at the beginning of the outbreak when there were no organised ways to manage social distancing, but that now seems to almost have disappeared. People have more guidance and know how to work appropriately. We are also seeing people want to use marketing more than ever to promote their brands online. We have seen a monumental number of entries in the Global Green Beauty Awards. This awards is green and clean, and it seems the coronavirus outbreak has also led people to be more environmentally aware. This has been the perfect backdrop to enter the 2020 Global Green Beauty Awards.
Though we had to postpone Asia as a beauty awards which was due to launch, regrettably, during the Chinese coronavirus outbreak, as a whole the other regions haven't been affected and are going ahead as scheduled. As an online beauty awards and makeup awards, we are online only so thankfully we have not had to cancel any galas and therefore on a personal level haven't been too affected by the crisis.
We hope everyone is slowly getting back to normal and looking forward to nominating their brands in our upcoming USA Global Makeup Awards (An American Beauty Award) and the Global Green Beauty Awards (an environmentally friendly green beauty award).

We are so delighted to announce that tomorrow the USA 2020 Global Makeup Awards opens!
We are so excited to make this awards truly global as through opening in the USA, the beauty hub of the world, we will be sure to see huge innovation in the beauty and cosmetics industry.
The global makeup awards looks at new launches - so we are looking for beauty entries which have been launched after January 2018 and and are available to purchase in the USA. The global makeup awards is currently open in three regions - the UK, Scandinavia, and now also the USA.
Winners receive a paper certificate, a mention in our online magazine Global Makeup Magazine and a link on our website. It costs £100 to enter the awards with one product and we require 6 product samples. Products are judged on their efficacy by the judges, so as long as the product is a game changing, great product, you have a chance of winning an award!

Categories are for makeup, skincare, haircare, bodycare and brand categories. We are looking at a wide range of beauty innovations so there is a category for everyone within the beauty industry.
The deadline to enter is August 1st and winners will be announced on September 10th 2020.
We look forward to seeing a host of new brands enter, especially ones which are only based in the USA. To enter the awards, your beauty brand has to be available to purchase in the USA, either in a shop or by post.
USA 2020 Global Makeup Awards launch June 1st 2020
We are ecstatic to announce the launch of the USA 2020 Global Makeup Awards. We had over 350 entrants for the UK awards, and we are sure we are going to beat this record with the USA.
The USA is the global leader in beauty and cosmetics which means we can't wait to see their hottest launches for 2020. We were so excited to go to the North America, Las Vegas COSMOPROF beauty event this year, which has been postponed. It typically attracts over 40,000 guests which is quite incredible. They are hoping their June dates will now be in September but due to the coronavirus outbreak this might be postponed again. Let's wait and see!
Regardless of Las Vegas Cosmoprof, we will be going ahead with the USA 2020 Global Makeup Awards. We have some key dates for your calender so be sure to put down the following for our beauty awards:

To enter the awards we are looking only for the newest and freshest beauty products - so we are looking for products launched after January 2018 only. We require 6 x product samples which will be judged by our panel of judges. Please note that for shipping from the USA to the UK you will need to fill our the appropriate customs label! We have categories for makeup, skincare, body care, haircare innovation and more, so have a look at our USA 2020 Global Makeup Awards product categories list which is available to view now. The product entry page will be open from June 1st when the awards go live for entries.
From big to Indy brands, we have seen that everyone is in for a chance to win with our beauty awards. Winners will receive a paper certificate and an online winners badge for their gold, silver or bronze wins in the awards. Online they will also get a back link direct to their website and gold winners will also have a free image on our website to enhance their win.
If, however, green and clean is more your thing, then why not look into our Global Green Beauty Awards. This is open to brands globally and there are no launch date restrictions. There are categories for brands and beauty products which are green, organic, natural, ethical, zero waste, cruelty free or made from key natural ingredients. It's been a glorious July and so the team at the Global Makeup Awards thought we would go for a team day. Nothing brings about brainstorming of ideas like sitting in a beautiful summer garden in the rolling countryside. So we booked a luxury country house in the lovely countryside of Oxfordshire. We were taken by the friendly drivers from Sprinters Travel who took our whole group there from Marlow in a stylish Mercedes minibus which the whole girl gang loved!
The group was travelling from across areas like Windsor, Marlow and London, so we thought Oxfordshire was the perfect place to unwind, relax and brainstorm our big projects for 2020. We are currently open with the Scandinavian Global Makeup Awards but we still have big and huge things to make nexts years awards even bigger. So many beauty, cosmetics and makeup brands participated in the Global Makeup Awards this year, so we wanted to see what we can do to make next year even more awesome.
We want to celebrate even more winners, so we will be adding 'commended' winners to our list for those brands who don't place first or second place but still deserve a mention. We will also revisit our categories - there's big things out there in the world of hand and nail care and we want to recognise that. Our perspex trophies were also a huge success so we want to continue with our makeup awards trophies next year and continue with their beautiful style.
Over a glass of two of bubbling prosecco, the girls in the team had even more ideas. We want to see more GMA branding, more stamps, more compliment slips, more boxes and more work on social media. So be prepared to see our Global Makeup Awards logo take over next year in the 2020s. Next years awards will be bigger and better as we take the cosmetics and makeup side of the awards by storm! There are so many makeup brands that are out there ant nor recognised enough, so we want more and more brands to be participating! We absolutely cannot wait!
The team also love anything a bit fancy, so we will putting in a few luxury categories next year to find out the creme of the creme beauty and cosmetics products. As we only look at newly launched products each year it means consumers will know the hottest makeup products around, and to win a luxury category will really mean something for the big brands.
Galas in London?
Something really huge which the team is keen to move forwards with is an awards gala ceremony in a nice hotel in central London. We think it is important to recognise the winners of the global makeup awards in style, so this is a goal we want to work towards in the coming years. The Global Makeup Awards had its inaugural opening in 2019, so we still need to grow a little bit as a brand in order to hold a large gala. A gala is absolutely our end goad as it will truly celebrate the brands in style and show our awards off as the top makeup awards globally! We would like to then introduce this in Stockholm or Denmark as well as in New York.
We had many requests this year already to hold a gala to celebrate the beauty awards but it was not somewhere where we were at yet. However, keep an eye out as this is something we will be wanting to bring out in the near future. Anything glam is always on the teams agenda at the GMAs. So with a gala it will be a really opportunity for all to really show off the best makeup and cosmetics by having the brand partners showing up wearing their best and newly launched makeup and beauty products!
After a great day of team building and brainstorming in the sun, it was time for us to jump on our luxury minibus by Sprinters Travel and to travel back home in style. What a truly great day spent with excellent people planning big things for the GMA's next year!
Top Tips on promoting your Global Makeup Award win
With 40 categories, and both gold and silver winners with each category, - we have 80 winners in the UK Global Makeup Awards 2019. So now its time for some of those big award winners to promote their wins! We've seen some great ways to publicise the wins, so we thought we would share some ideas with you in case you're wondering how to make the most out of your 2019 Global Makeup Award win.

We love the look of Yardley London's social media posts. They have used the stunning floral design from their Flowerful Collection to create a summery border. We love the final look of this post as it suits the beautiful June weather which is the month their award was won in. It matches the beautiful name of their collection - the Flowerful collection and is a great way to grab attention on social media. What a creative post from argentum apothecary! We absolutely adore the art work which is in keeping with their band style. An extremely innovative and creative way to promote their three wins for Best Luxury Brand, Best Packaging and Best Cleanser. We really do adore what they have done with their win as it makes it look like a burst of sunshine with the hands beautiful cupping the awards logo. This post is really so creative, this really does deserve some gold stars for their innovation and creativity to make something so beautiful to promote their win. The mix of black and white contrasting against the colour of the logo is stunning. Thank you argentum apothecary for not only your award winning beauty products, but also your innovation and style in promoting them!
