What an exciting time! Last week we announced the winners of the 2021 UK Global Makeup Awards.
This is the most thrilling part of the job and we absolutely love being able to provide recognition to the best in the business! In today’s blog, we’d like to shine a light on some of the skincare winners, so you know a little more about the products as well as the people and companies behind them!
Let’s begin with EcoTan by Sonya Driver with the Super Citrus Cleanser which deservedly won gold for the Best Cleanser and silver for Hempitan for the category of Best Fake Tan! The story behind the brand Eco by Sonya is both touching and inspiring. After going through an extremely traumatic period and having her life turned upside down, Sonya then discovered her sister had to have a melanoma removed from her arm, leaving a significant scar. After discovering that tanning products which were being advertised as 99% natural were actually very misleading, Sonya decided to start her own brand. The brand now boasts a range of great products and Sonya says the Super Citrus Cleanser is her favourite as it cleanses skin beautifully in a non-harmful way. Also, the bottle is so big that she also uses it as body lotion!
Now, we’ll take a deeper look at the Gold Winner for best toner! SkinChemists Advanced Brightening Toner beat some stiff competition to walk away with the award, now let us tell you a little more about their story and you might see why they also won one of our most prestigious categories - Gold for Best Luxury Skincare brand as well as a few other wins under their belt in this year's 2021 UK Global Makeup Awards.
Richard Walker, the founder and MD of SkinChemists is clearly very proud of both the brand and its history, and it’s easy to see why. The company started eleven years ago although Richard grew up around skincare products, his father being a chemist who was passionate and clear about wanting to create products which would make the world a better place! Richard also has a very clear goal! He states that his objective for SkinChemists is to become the world’s #1 cosmeceutical brand. He is also understandably proud of their remarkable achievement of selling 1,500 units within 24 hours of their website first going live!
The Advanced Brightening Toner is a fantastic product which gives skin a healthy, even glow and radiates health. It's also great for acne care as well as maintaining skin elasticity and providing smoothing, softening and moisturising properties.
So once again, big congratulations to Skinchemists London and to EcoTan by Sonya. Both deserved Gold Winners at this year’s UK 2021 Global Makeup Awards and both with wonderful and inspiring back stories behind the brands. We honestly think that the companies that clearly have a strong passion for what they do always create the best products and it’s so interesting to read about their journeys and the reasons behind them wanting to create their own products!

Hair conditioner is an important part of the process of looking after your hair. Conditioner is usually
applied after you’ve shampooed and many people see it as the reason why hair looks shiny and feels
great. However, it’s a little more complicated than simply grabbing a conditioner from your local store and using it.
What Conditioner Does
When you wash your hair you need to consider two things; what type of scalp do you have and how
do the ends of your hair look. As many dermatologists will agree, the wrong products will encourage
skin issues on your scalp. This results in rashes and itchiness. But, it also means you’re stripping your
head of essential oils and preventing your hair from getting the nutrients it needs.
You can have an oily scalp and dry, split ends. This shows the nutrition isn’t getting through the hair
and you need to change the products you’re using. Shampoo opens the cuticles in your hair, allowing you to remove excess oil and debris. But, shampoos with harsh chemicals can also suck the moisture from your hair, leaving it dry, brittle, and easily damaged.
Your conditioner closes your cuticles, locking moisture and nutrients into your hair. That’s what
makes it such an important part of your hair care regime. Of course, conditioners can also help you
to tame your hair and encourage the glossy mane.
Choosing The Right Conditioner
The secret to successfully conditioning your hair is to ensure you’re using the right conditioner.
There are hundreds to choose from. But the one thing you’ll notice from reputable products, such as
the Kevin Murphy range, is that they use natural products. These are designed to help your hair
stay healthy, as opposed to harsh chemicals that can strip the goodness from your hair.
Of course, you will need to adopt a trial and error approach to find the perfect conditioner for you
and your hair type, it’s a personal decision.
How Long Should You Leave It In For?
When using a conditioner you’ve probably been curious about how long it should be left in for.
While it is acceptable to lather with conditioner and wash it straight out, this will simply help to
protect your hair. To ensure you’re giving it all the nutrients it needs to shine, you should, three or
four times a week, leave it in for twenty to thirty minutes.
Simply lather the conditioner into your hair and then leave it, this gives the ingredients time to be
absorbed into your hair and improve its health. You should note that leaving it in for longer than thirty minutes has no discernable benefit. In effect,
your hair is fully hydrated and should look fantastic. Leaving the conditioner in won’t increase the
hydration level as this will be impossible.
If you’re in a rush then five minutes of conditioning while you wash your body will suffice. But, you
should make time to condition it for thirty minutes several times every week. You will end up with
hair that a celebrity would be proud to have.

The 2021 UK Global Makeup Awards is drawing to a close with entries closing in two weeks, on 15th March 2021. Immediately after, the 2021 Global Green Beauty Awards open. It has been exhilarating for the UK market, as after the success of last year, which was our biggest year to date, who knew what the future would hold for 2021 which sees the UK reeling from the effects of its biggest recesion to date due to the coronavirus outbreak. The beauty industry was particularly hard hit, as the high street was closed, and with many people who had lost their jobs, there was less to spend on high end beauty items. On the other hand, self-care has never been so important - and home hair kits and home spa products have seen a rise.
Our beauty predictions for 2021 from what we've seen so far is a leap towards more affordable and more eco beauty goods that you can use at home. Unfortunately, we've also seen a lot of famous beauty houses collapse. Victoria Beckham Beauty has closed its London store. Other colour cosmetics brands have taken a hit, as with social venues and work places being closed people just don't need it. Overwhelmingly, we have seen an increased demand for skincare haircare, wellness and of course sanitization. We have seen many beauty brands bring out hand sanitisers and hand creams and soaps in a reaction against the COVID19 pandemic. In fact at the start of the pandemic, you couldn't find hand soap or hand sanitiser for love nor money in any supermarket or pharmacy. OUr UK 2021 Global Makeup Awards responded to this with the following new categories:

Boy oh boy are we glad it's February. We can see the daffodils and crocuses peaking out, and it seems slowly but surely that Spring is on its way. Well, in between the snow storms, rain and I think tonight it's going to hit -7 degrees. However, I'm hopeful that there are warmer days around the corner.
Between being a working mum and organising these awards, the bad weather has truly made it more of a challenge with this bad weather. And with Spring, comes the announcement of the UK 2021 Global Makeup Awards. This is our biggest local beauty awards of the year out of our regions for UK, Asia, Scandinavia and USA. The UK is a truly special market when it comes to beauty awards, as consumers look to awards to find the best of the best in the hottest new makeup and cosmetics trends.
These awards aren't just for makeup though, they cover skincare, body care, hair care and of course the brand categories which look into Vegan, the packaging and Natural brands. Over the years we have seen an array of brands enter - from huge brands like L'Occitane, Boots, FOREO, Mary Kay, Avon, Nu Skin, REN Skincare, to Liz Earle and their super famous hot cloth cleanser. (Which incidentally won gold in the 2020 Global Green Beauty Awards.)
Honestly - after the last 12 months we've had, I'm not quite sure what to expect in this year's awards. But I am predicting more hygiene entries - more shower gels, hand gels and soaps and more hand creams. With the cold weather and all the washing of hands, I think people want to use better quality products that not only look after their hands and keep them from being dry but also that clean properly. When it comes to bath and shower products, I think people will just be wanting a good luscious pamper. Lastly - for makeup and cosmetics - of course eyes are all important. As are in-home beauty treatments like face masks, tweezers and fake lashes you can apply yourself.
Entries for the UK 2021 Global Makeup Awards close on 15th March. You've got to be in it to win it! So if you are a beauty brand - why not enter this years beauty awards and celebrate your amazing new beauty products. We all need a pick me up at the moment - and the consumers in the UK want to find out which products has been voted the best by a panel of experts.

I get so excited about Christmas and the whole build-up ...and then get to have it all again in January as I'm just as excited about the opening of entries for the Global Makeup Awards! There are no January slumps here!
Entries are now open for the 2021 UK Global Makeup Awards and also the 2021 ASIA Global Makeup Awards which is their first inaugural year due to so many requests from Asian, and Eurasian countries. We love working with new brands and like-minded companies and discover so many amazing products.
One of my favourite categories is for BEST INNOVATIVE PRODUCT. Last year in the UK Global Makeup Awards some of the GOLD WINNERS were Tweezerfile and House of Life London for their facial advance no 31. I’d love to share some more information about these companies with you now.
Firstly, can I say that Tweezerfile have the most beautiful website, unlike most company websites
out there. It’s not just extremely easy on the eye but also really engaging and fun, while still being
user-friendly and easy to navigate. We were all together and talking about our favourite beauty products that have entered our beauty awards over the years, and a special product popped up for all of us. Maybe because it is for a very specific part of your body, but we love looking after our chest, as it is one of the first places to show the signs of ageing, and we haven't seen many products that tackle the problem of a wrinkly decolletage!

The entries for this year's 2020 Scandinavian Global Makeup Awards have officially closed now. We are still accepting late product sample deliveries because of all the crazy world events that have been going on, including a UK lockdown 2.0.
Entries for the Scandinavian Global Makeup Awards are for all brands which are either Scandinavian (so beauty brands from Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark or Iceland) or other beauty brands which sell in those nordic beauty markets. We were expecting to see a hit on entries for this year's awards given the global circumstances, but actually, entries have soared. We had DOUBLE, that's right, double, the number of entrants compared to last year's 2019 Scandinavian Global Makeup Awards.
So this has us thinking - how has COVID19 affected the beauty market in Scandinavia? We have already looked into its impact in previous blog posts for how it has impacted the American Beauty Market and UK Beauty Market. The Nordics, however, have had different lockdown procedures, different healthcare, different economies and of course different social impacts. Euromonitor looked specifically at Sweden in a study (which is famous for not following a national lockdown like other countries during 2020.) Though they saw premium products were in greater demand, they also saw profit margins were under pressure. Read their full article here. Even more encouraging, they expect the markets to bounce back strongly for the personal care and beauty sector in 2021, as they expected many Swedes to make postponed beauty purchases in 2021.
Furthermore, according to National News Service, an interesting thing to consider wit Scandinavia is that all 5 countries are developed countries whose consumers have money to keep their personal care product traders afloat. Another trend which has thrived in 2020 despite the coronavirus pandemic is that of Green and sustainable beauty in Scandinavia. There is an increased preference for vegan, organic and natural beauty products. The Nordic countries are looking to avoid toxic ingredients and want to be more socially responsible looking for more sustainable products.
With the 2020 Scandinavian Global Makeup Awards coming up, it will be interesting to see if we see this trend in our beauty awards. The winners will be announced soon on the 10th December 2020 in the online magazine Global Makeup Magazine. The categories are not only for makeup, but for a whole range of personal care and cosmetic products. According to Mordor, the Scandinavians and especially the Swedes have a 'relatively high purchasing power' - so perhaps not only will we see an increase in green beauty products but also in luxury goods as well.
This is our last beauty awards for 2020, and we truly hope next year will bring the beauty markets a bounceback, not just for the Scandi regions, but globally. We cancelled what would have been the inaugural year for the Asian Global Makeup Awards because of the outbreak of the pandemic in January, but little did we know what mother nature had in store for us for the whole globe in 2020. After yesterday's news of a vaccine, we can only hope of a year of more stability next year. Despite so many hurdles that the markets have had to jump over this year, we have seen an incredible number of entries and resilience from the beauty brands.
We look forward to promoting the wins of the brands in December and look forward to the clock striking 12 on New Year's Eve, where hopefully things take a turn and we will have a slam dunk in to the New Year and see a strong growth for the personal care markets.

First product we have been testing Is FIINI Oat Sea Buckthorne Oil Serum. Not just a moisturiser but also helps inflammation and reddening. The oat content stimulates the skin’s metabolism, increases elasticity and stimulates collagen production. Ingredients include beta carotene, vitamins A, C and E, plus Omegas 3, 6 and 9 which promotes skin renewal. It can also be used in lightening the appearance of liver spots. We are also testing another of their droppers, the blackcurrant face oil particularly formulated for oily and combination skin. Ingredients include Jojoba, blackcurrant seed oil and rosemary. Another of their products with blackcurrant is is their Balm to Milk Cleanser with Blackcurrant.
This syrupy looking product literally changes shape and form with the addition of water and rubs into the skin with a milk consistency. Finally we are testing their 50 ml tin of shea butter. Great for the handbag or pocket when you go out on a chill day. Shea butter has been used as a cosmetic ingredient for centuries and is particularly effective for acne, cell regeneration and burns. Great for protecting your lips ain’t the cold weather and moisturising when sitting in central heating.
Fiini Naturally won multiple awards in the 2020 Global Green Beauty Awards - you can read all of the winner's here on our past winners page. Judges were wowed by the ethics behind the brand, the simple natural ingredients and also their dedication to sustainable packaging. In fact, did you know all of their beauty products are packaged in recyclable glass or metal jars and their cardboard boxes are made of recycled cardboard. To ensure ecological logistics further commit to sourcing their ingredients in large batches and without plastic wrapping.
After a long, steamy summer the nights are drawing in earlier, heating is going on and time for a bit of cosy on down.
The Danish and Norwegians have a word for this. Hygge. A hug for the soul, mind and consciousness. Giving yourself a pamper and creating a feeling of ease and contentment. Hard in the current climate. It’s not just the weather assaulting our mind and body but the current pandemic is making us all keep to our homes whether by choice or legislation.
It seems an appropriate time to look at beauty products coming from our colder cousins, as they are the pioneers of S-Beauty aka Scandinavian Beauty. Think of all things Nordic, including the people, and the ability to keep fresh and strong comes to mind. People who have known how to take care of themselves in extremes of weather, keep safe, well and healthy. Great respecters of their environment and of themselves, and known for natural, clean beauty products. In fact, this is why we created the Scandinavian Global Makeup Awards - as those from the Scandinavian countries, have a wholly different approach to skincare and cosmetics, keeping things clean and natural.
We may not want to run naked through the snow to throw ourselves into a natural hot geyser but we would all like to know what pleasure is aroused buy this act. Because there must be a pay off!
So, we must look to the Skandi natural resources that we can use and indeed practice the respect they ave for our living world.
The judges have been long been admirers of SKOGEN products, who were winners in the 2019 Scandinavian Global Makeup Awards and the 2020 Global Green Beauty Awards. Not just because of Skogen Cosmetics fabulous packaging which in itself is worthy to grace the shelves of any discerning designer led aficionado but the contents are truly amazing. Our judges have had The Jasmine Collection on test.
Giving or receiving these products is an act of hygge in itself. The outer packaging is an extremely well manufactured box in royal blue but on opening the inside has been decorated with beautiful photographic scenes from the countryside. Just to get you in the right frame of mind. Every products differs with its interior. And sitting regally inside this gorgeous presentation box sit a violet blue capsule which seems to float inside a transparent outer covering. Even the men sit up and notice the beauty of the presentation of the SKOGEN Range.
The underlying theme of the serums and creams is Jasmine. This is a beautiful fragrance for those who don’t like their products too earthy. And luckily we are all different so it's lovely to have a fragranced option.
SKOGEN is a Swedish/US collaboration. Definitely a high end product the products have given great results. We love the fact that these luxury products still retain the criteria of being healthy and environmentally friendly. The Face Serum and Day Moisturiser leave the skin feeling wonderfully fed and radiant. Using the serum in conjunction with the Night moisturiser results in skin ready to face the day! SKOGEN EYE SERUM and EYE CREAM definitely helped this delicate area of the face minimising dark circles and invigorating this part of the face that many of us need help with. Especially when sleep has been hard to find!
Last but certainly not least the Judges loved the non surgical Face Mask. King Tut would have loved this product. Looking like a gold mask this product contains a full set of 12 treatments which are soaked in a highly concentrated serum. Ingredients include hyaluronic acid, algae extract, we carat gold and vitamins to leave the skin rejuvenated, deeply nourished and radiant. This product also importantly stimulates cell vitality to enhance firmness. Use it post procedures to stimulate healing. Use it to minimise redness and even skin tones. Or just use it for a bit of your own hygge!

Biovène Oil Replacement, Hair Wrap Treatment
Advertised as being a Hair Wrap Treatment + Oil Replacement Feature + Packed with the Wonders of Arian Extract, Moroccan Oil and Sodium Hyaluronate we were wondering if this Biovene product could really come up with these promises. It did.
This handy sachet contains an immediate pick up for dry, damaged hair and did indeed leave it feeling healthier and glossier. We have already spoken about how much we adore the Biovène Shampoo Bars, and this hair wrap lived up to the name of the other products too.
Such a small sachet with such a big punch! We loved it. Just opening the sachet revealed a really substantial cap containing the serum. Much stronger than the usual shower cap type it promised it was going to be a quality product. After washing hair and leaving in a towel dry condition we put the cap on, fastening it with a really good adhesive tab. Good start. Massage the product in and leave for another 20 minutes. Towel dry hair for some us meant hair that was impossible to brush through. After the treatment hair comes out that was easily combed! Amazing. After drying hair was left visibly in much better condition. Soft and smooth to the touch. Looks as though we are going to be in another Covid -19 wave. Make sure you get this product in your hair product box. It’s a definite great one for longer waits to get to the hairdresser. A professional finish for not a great deal of money - only 3.49 euros.

A five minute face mask that impressed us with ease of use, wake up feel, and beautiful softening and smoothing effect on the skin. So simple to place the mask in the correct place on the face with eyes, nose and mouth in the right place! Had perfect clinging effect on the skin With only a few bubbles to smooth out. Dermatologically created and tested and containing no silicone this very affordable product is definitely one to look out for. After five minutes skin felt fresh and invigorated. Sling was soft and glowing. We used some of the product left in the mask to apply as a further moisturiser just to make use of every drop of this lovely mask.
