Hi everyone!
It’s been a really busy period for us but working on the 2022 Scandinavia Global Makeup Awards has been so much fun and we’re so excited to announce the winners! It's snowing in London today, and it feels so appropriate to announce our Nordic awards with the views outside looking reminiscent of Scandi fjords. The full list of winners is published in our free Global Makeup Magazine (just click the photo above to open in full size)but today let’s take a quick look at some of the skincare gold winners! I’ve written about Icelandic brand Taramar in a previous blog so I won’t repeat myself here but it’s great to see this fantastic (and relatively new) brand continue to go from strength to strength, winning Gold for Best Moisturizer with their Taramar Hydration Treatment. Another winner is one of my favourites, the Estonian brand Nurme. Using natural products, they also use beautiful packaging and are deserved Gold winners in our Best Night Cream category for their NURME Collagen renewal Night cream 50ml. Let’s now look at the Gold Winner for Best Cleanser - AiiA Cleanser. This fantastic Danish brand was founded by an inspirational lady named Trine. Her story is so interesting though, that I wouldn’t do justice to it if I tried to tell it now but I’d love to dedicate a whole blog to it in the near future! Taramar - The Gold for Best Serum went to Taramar for their Arctic Flower Treatment. Taramar has a long history of success at the Global Makeup Awards and this year was no exception as they continue to bring their unique method to the beauty industry. They are another brand which I have covered in greater depth during previous blogs so I’ll just give a quick synopsis of them here. Proudly Icelandic, all of their products are designed around isolated natural compounds found in their local seaweed and kelp. Really unique and interesting stuff! Let’s look now at Gold winner for Best (Face) Mask -which was Purodoré with their Natural Skincare Regenerating Sleep Mask. This family-owned, Finnish brand also proudly uses local ingredients in many of their products! Amazingly (and coincidentally) , that ingredient is gold, but not just any gold! Previously, I had no idea that the planet's purest gold was found in Finland! There’s one for your family Christmas quizzes!!! In fact, the name Purodore translates into English as Gold Stream, inspired by the beautiful, clear rivers found in Lapland. Finally, for today’s blog, let’s look at who took Gold for Best Anti Ageing Product which was Vintage Beauty and their Volume Serum 40+. This family business comes to us from the suburbs of Rotterdam via Budapest. The Szakonyi family consists of two successful entrepreneurs and 4 naughty children and have a fascinating story behind their wonderful brand. I wouldn’t do it justice to try and squeeze it all in now, it's definitely deserving of its own blog in the near future! I can’t wait to do it! So, there we have just a very quick snapshot of some of the wonderful winners at the 2022 Scandinavia Global Makeup Awards. Working on these awards has been really fun and rewarding! Thank you so much to all the participants for once again pushing the benchmark higher! We’re so happy to recognise your hard work! I’ll be back soon but until then, ciao for now! Dan

I love all things Scandinavia - S beauty, the countries , the expos the Hygge!Hi everyone,
How are you enjoying the recent transition of the seasons! As I write this on Sunday morning I’m thinking about going out for a hike in the mountains later. I love the clean air, being in the middle of nature, and the view from the top of the mountain. One side looks out across the lake and today the air is very clear so we should be able to see for miles. The other side looks out across untouched forest, a completely different world. But first, I have some important information!!! Entries close for the Scandinavia Global Makeup Awards on Monday 7th November so you don’t have much time to get your entries in. I really love Scandinavia and I also really love their beauty brands. Actually, I think I love the countries and the brands for the same reasons I love walking in the mountains. The appreciation of nature, the clean air, the connection to the planet. I’m always impressed at how Scandinavian brands seem to be ahead of the game when it comes to green beauty and business responsibility so these awards are fantastic to be a part of. The standards of all the brands are so high, I honestly feel that Scandinavia is right at the forefront of beauty innovation and an example of how brands should be run. Last year’s awards were so exciting to be a part of. We celebrated success with some of the area’s top brands including Dr.Ankerstjerne, White Lotus, Glam of Sweden, Rosenserien, Henrik Vibskov, Haan, Humderkin as well as many others. Just writing about last year’s events is making me excited about my next Trip to Finland in May. Last time I went I was amazed by the hospitality of the locals and the beauty of the area. I enjoyed authentic sauna’s, camping in the forest, great food and some of the cleanest air you can breathe. If you haven’t visited yet, I can’t recommend it enough. Actually, there are also some excellent Beauty expos coming up, beginning in Sweden with Eco Life Scandinavia Malmö 16. - 17. November 2022 | The leading sustainable living trade fair in Scandinavia. This event is specifically for vegan and free-from products, an area which many of last year’s winners have a great deal of expertise in. Then, in March 2023 there is the Hair and Beauty Finland Expo (18.-19.03.2022) which will take place in Helsinki. Those are just some ideas for those of you who may be interested in a trip to the homelands of some of the best beauty products on the market. More pressingly though, is the deadline for the 2022 Scandinavia Global Makeup Awards which is tomorrow! So if your brand is based in Scandinavia or connected to the area don’t hesitate to get involved so that all your hard work can be recognised. I’ll sign off here and start making some sandwiches for my hike but I’ll be back again very soon! Ciao for now Dan Calling all Scandi brands - it's your last chance to enter our last beauty awards of the year! It's your last chance to enter!

Dan's must-haves of award winning S-Beauty BrandsHi again everyone,
Today I want to share some more information with you about last year’s winners at the Scandinavia Global Makeup Awards. Two of these brands are repeat winners while one is a brand new company that has made a huge impact on the industry! Let’s start with BEST ANTI AGEING PRODUCT GOLD WINNER which was Founders Formula with the their marvallous Australian Botanicals Pro-Aging Treatment Concentrate Serum Founder, Annie Holden launched the company last year after being inspired three years earlier after visiting the Cosmoprof beauty trade show in Bologna with her friend. Noticing that Australia was badly under-represented in the beauty world she made a decision to change that, especially as she knew that Australia’s plant-life is renowned for their active ingredients and their potential for skincare. BEST TONER GOLD WINNER was Bruns with their N°103b Green Mist Unscented. This Swedish company was initially created by Johanna as a hairdressing salon. Later, another experienced hairdressing professional Cecila bought into the company. The duo wanted to make safe, natural hairdressing products and avoid the chemicals and their effects which they’d seen too much of over their careers. Their objective was to make hair products that were free of harmful chemicals and with help from Johanna’s 75 year-old father Per, an expert in the composition of raw materials, they created their first products Then, we have Eleni & Chris who were BEST CONDITIONER GOLD WINNER with their CurliMin Defining Conditioner. This brand is the result of a mother-daughter collaboration and despite having very different approaches, Inger Ellen and Christinah Nicolaisen share a strong drive to create the best products possible, taking great inspiration from the Scandinavian roots. Whilst they differ in their background and approach, Inger Ellen and Christinah share an extraordinary level of drive, passion and creativity, rooted in and inspired by their Scandinavian home. The partnership of these women is founded in mutual respect of the strengths that they each bring to the creation of beauty products embodied by their unique spirit. The brand began in 2015 when the pair made the decision to use local ingredients, particularly berries to create a range of products. I have visited Scandinavia several times and I love how passionate the inhabitants are about their berries. Cloudberries in particular are particularly precious, almost impossible to find outside of Scandinavia and difficult to find even there. However, research and laboratory analysis showed that the cloudberry is full of vitamins as well as calcium and magnesium. This is a truly unique product and a wonderful example of Scandinavian Ingredients. Thanks again for joining me as I learn more about the people and the stories behind last year’s winners. Each company has their own unique raison-d'etre yet we all share common ground with our love for good-quality beauty products. That’s one of the things that makes running these awards so rewarding and fun! We cannot wait for the 2022 Scandinavia Global Makeup Awards, we just know that its going to be even bigger and better than previous years! I’ll be back soon! Ciao for now! Dan Hi everyone,
In the past couple of blogs we’ve looked in a bit more detail at some of last year’s winners at the 2021 Scandinavia Global Makeup Awards. Today, I’m going to focus on some of the winners in brand categories, as opposed to product categories. These look at the brand as a whole and are among the most prestigious of our awards. The first winner we’re going to look at is Rosenserien who walked away as BEST ORGANIC BEAUTY BRAND GOLD WINNER. Rosenserien was founded around 40 years ago when co-founder Laine Nilsson, who at the time was working as a hairdresser, realised that some of the chemicals and ingredients in the products she was using were having a negative effect on her skin. After conducting a great deal of research around natural alternatives, and collaborating with local chemists, in 1984 the first products went on the market. Today, Laine’s daughter Carina Swartz is in charge of the brand, continuing her mother’s mission and leading Rosenerien to a series of awards including as one of Sweden's ”Super Companies” 2010 and 2011. Next we have BEST SCANDINAVIAN BEAUTY BRAND GOLD WINNER - Zenz Organic. This Danish company takes great pride in their expertise as professional hairdressers and believe this makes them the ideal people to create products for other professional hairdressers. The team are passionate about creating natural and healthy products. They also have an impressive desire to work in a sustainable way and incorporate this into their everyday strategies. Their philosophy is to be at the forefront of sustainable beauty and to always be part of the solution and never the problem! Inspirational! Another big success in the BEST SCANDINAVIAN BEAUTY BRAND category was Fiini Naturally. This wonderful Finnish company is the result of a beautiful friendship that began 20 years ago while the co-founders Heidi and Essi were still in high school. The two definitely have some kind of strong connection; their lives followed similar patterns and shared similar interests and passions. Something else they both share is that they have sensitive skin and had trouble finding skincare products that worked for them. Living in Finland, which is full of wildlife and has some of the cleanest air in the world, they were in the right place to combine their passion for nature and clean beauty to create a fantastic brand which is kind to sensitive skin and environmentally-friendly. They proudly use Finnish raw ingredients as much as possible, take special care that their packaging is also ecologically responsible and prefer to test new products on their own skin before bringing them to the market, absolutely no animal testing is involved! Well, that brings me to the end of another blog. Once again I’ve really enjoyed delving into the stories behind the brands, always so interesting and inspiring! I’ll be back very soon with a new blog which will focus on the classic brands which successfully-entered and won in the 2021 Scandinavia Global Makeup Awards. Ciao for now! Dan Hi again everyone!
Yikes, January is already over! That was quick!!! I am enjoying watching the evenings gradually get lighter though! As much as I am always disappointed when, after all the build-up and excitement, Christmas is over, I can’t wait for spring and summer to arrive! Big News! The 2022 Scandinavia Global Makeup Awards have been announced! We are receiving entries from new brands who haven’t entered before and, as always, we are so excited to assess the increasingly impressive products which enter. We also have sent our their gorgeous winner's trophy - the pespex looks so great sitting on glass to promote your win to your customers and clients. Today I’d like to remind you about some of the 2021 Scandinavia Global Makeup Awards winners! Let’s start with BEST CLEANSER GOLD WINNER, Dr.Ankerstjerne with their WASH The Day Off facial cleanser. On their website, the company leads with the following line “ Developed by Norwegian doctors for Scandinavian conditions”. I love this as I think it beautifully and succinctly represents the brand while also reinforcing trust in the quality and research behind the cleanser! Additionally, it’s reassuring to know that skincare products which are designed to work in the cold scandinavian winters will also work for our team members based in London and Northern italy! Founders Stine and Andre Ankerstjerne prefer to run a small line of products and to concentrate on making them as effective as possible. The couple spent five years conducting research and performing testing before launching the brand in 2018. Meanwhile, BEST MOISTURISER SILVER WINNER was Transderma M for their Moisture Serum. Having spent over 30 years researching natural antioxidants and vitamins, Dr. Alvin Ronlán applied his wealth of knowledge and expertise to create the vitamin skin serums which make this Swedish brand one of the best products on the market. One of the main objectives for Transderma M is to support long-term healthy skin. Recognising that as we age, the vitamins that reach our skin via the food we eat gradually reduce, this company aims to provide a targeted approach, directly applying vitamins to skin cells to provide a revitalised and healthy look. The Gold Winner for BEST HAIR PRODUCT went to Owow Kit - which also happens to be 30% off in their January sale! Founder, Georgiana Grudinschi believes that the key to looking good lies in products which are simple, convenient, healthy and ethical. In her story she explains how she used to love getting conventional chemical treatments on her hair but began searching for a more affordable alternative! Through her research, she discovered how damaging some of those treatments she had been using could be for her health and became determined to create a solution that would give great results but not at a price to her health or indeed to the health of the planet. OK! That’s just a quick look at three marvellous brands which I urge you to check out! Also, don’t forget that the UK, ASIA and USA Global Makeup Awards for 2022 went live earlier this month and there is still time to enter! I’ll be back very soon with a look at some more success stories from the 2021 Scandinavian Global Makeup Awards. Until then, ciao for now! Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas, and see you on 6th January for the opening of our Global Makeup Awards for UK, ASIA and USA. Peace and love Dom Let’s say goodbye to. 2020 and look forward to 2021.
It’s not been all bad news. Coronavirus has seen such a lot of bad and sad news but the one positive aspect of it has been the world having to focus on where we have been going wrong and what we, as curators of the world, can do to endeavour to secure a much healthier life for our children and their descendants. Let’s admit that some of us have had our eyes opened to what’s been going on around us. We know we have got to be much more proactive in positivity towards the planet. Some countries have always been much more aware of their environments and how to respect nature. So keeping positive thoughts in mind the team have been really impressed by the Icelandic entrants to the Scandinavian Global Makeup Awards. Taking a pride of place on the winners shelf is Taramar. Their mantra is Working with Nature, not Against It. Founders of the company are two professors from the university of Iceland. One from the Faculty of life and Environmental Sciences and the other from the Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition. This is a company that does not mass produce their products at the expense of the environment and their workers. This is the Marine Superfood for the skin, based on compounds that are isolated from seaweed and kelp in an extract named Arctic Complex. Their research has shown that the bioactives from the seaweed promote anti-inflammation and anti-oxidants. Taramar contain no toxins or hormone disrupters. The company also promise they only use food grade ingredients in their formula. The end result on a time scale level is only achieved by using extractions that in some case can take months to achieve. This reflects their increasing interest in slow cosmetic methodology. No quick fix here and we appreciate the way the company don’t promise immediate overnight results. The best things in life are worth waiting for! Now to the nitty gritty! What did our judges think. Well, it was everything they could have wished for. From the classy packaging which is dark colours to protect the natural ingredients from being damaged by sunlight to the results the products actually achieve. We loved the wonderful tightness of Taramar The Serum and the cooling relaxing effect of Taramar The Eye treatment. Definitely a brand to look out for. Hello you beauties,
This December brings the last month of the whirlwind that has been 2020, and we are choosing to go out with a bang by announcing tomorrow our last beauty awards for the year: The 2020 Scandinavian Global Makeup Awards. In this beauty magazine, you can read all the winners for 2020. It is so much fun doing our makeup and beauty awards region by region. In this year's Scandinavia region, we see the hottest brands from the brassicaly cold Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland. The Nordics opt for a cleaner, and more eco friendly type of beauty - with product packaging often being recyclable, and the products itself often organic, non toxic and also usually non harmful to the environment. The products themselves are usually of extremely high quality and they tend to prefer a more minimalistic approach to beauty. Less is more, and the Scandinavians tend to prefer less bottles over more. Packaging, like the number of beauty products in their cabinet, is scaled black. There is more monochrome, more simplicity and yet more style. There was a myriad of entries in this years 2020 Scandinavian Global Makeup Awards and we had so many notable winners. For Hair and Body brands such as Rosenserien, to Sweden Eco, Eleni & Chris and Zenz Organic to makeup brands such as IDUN Minerals and Karmameju's beautiful new BB suncreams. We were excited to welcome this year SkinChemists, Dr Botanicals and Esse to the skincare categories along side past winners such as Barr Sweden and FOREO (who have launched their incredible beauty gadgets BEAR and UFO2. Other notable winners are Icelandic luxury skincare brand Taramar - which uses algae at the forefront of their science. Primex Iceland - which uses Chitosan as its unique ingredient (sustainable prawn shells from the Atlantic Ocean). Marina Miracle showcased their incredible range, from their lash and eyebrow serum which was a winner in previous awards as well as showcasing their skincare range - we loved their sweet and creamy oil cleanser. Aiia was also a strong winner in this years awards with its high end skincare founded upon water based serums. Winners in our beauty awards receive an entry on our website, an image and text in our online magazine and a certificate. Brands can even choose to further promote their win with a perspex trophy. The 2021 Scandinavian Global Makeup Awards will return September 15th 2021. With over 300 entrants it's impossible to name them all in one post, but we hope you enjoy reading our favourites in Global Makeup Magazine. Who knows what next year will have in store for us and the world. We were so impressed with all the brands ability to go with the flow all with the backdrop of a global pandemic which impacted staff working from home, warehouse organisation and postage logistics. In the face of such uncertainty, we know next year will be bigger and brighter as we saw such an impressive range of products entered. Products that can provide that much needed pick-me-up for those who have had to close themselves up at home with lockdown after lockdown enforced. To all our readers - Thank You! We are so happy so many of you tune into Global Makeup Magazine, and we wish you the happiest of Christmas Holidays and New Years. The Global Makeup Awards commences again from January 1st, launching with our biggest region for the Global Makeup Awards and then followed shortly after by Global Green Beauty Awards - which celebrates all green beauty and eco beauty award winners. Wishing you a safe December Dominique Editor of Global Makeup Magazine So we’ve all heard of K-Beauty which has become over the years an umbrella term for skin-care products that are derived from South Korea. However, a newer term in the world of beauty is S-Beauty - which stands for Scandinavian Beauty or Scandi-Beauty. Whereas K-beauty became famous in Europe as we were intrigued by their 10 step skincare regime - S Beauty is quite the opposite - looking at more minimalist products that have a higher efficacy.
In this year’s 2020 Scandinavian Global Makeup Awards, we thought it would be interesting to delve deeper into the intricacies of S-Beauty. At its core, S-Beauty is about an all natural beauty look, often using natural products. When it comes to makeup, S-beauty favours a more subtle look using natural and earthy colours that enhance your own natural beauty. Packaging is minimalist, futuristic and bang on trend, much like their renown Scandi decor. Self care while going through lockdown 2.0 is what is really important right now, and Scandinavians known how to hunker down and enjoy time indoor in the warm and cosy while it’s cold outside. In fact, Scandinavian winters are known for being sub-zero, and that can take a toll on the delicate skin on your face. S-Beauty with regards to skincare really looks at protecting your skin from the harshness of external factors like weather and pollutants while keeping it moisturised and nourished. An intensive serum is an absolute must for providing your skin with the protection it requires. What are the other traits of S-Beauty? Minimalism goes a long way, and you won’t find a Scandinavians bathroom counter filled with thousands of lotions and potions. Quality and functionality are paramount. Less products which DO more. You’ll also notice more moisturisers with SPF, and also even up to 50SPF as they take protection against sun damage very seriously. Scandi’s aren’t known like brits for being abroad and sporting a bright lobster pink sunburn. So who are the big names in Scandi Beauty right now? Perhaps the most well known in S-Beauty in the makeup world is Kkaer Weis, famous for high-performing, luxury makeup that is both certified organic and sustainable. In skincare, there is a myriad of names, as Scandinavians take their skincare routine very seriously. Despite being known as a nation of minimalism, they don’t skimp on the steps in skincare routine. Big name players are Rosenserien, FOREO, Eleni & Chris, Barr Sweden, Skogen Cosmetics, Primex Iceland and Mette Picaut, just to name a few. S-Beauty goes further than just the products that you put on your skin and the earthy tones of the makeup you choose. It is a way of life. Balance is central to all things Scandinavian, which is part of their appreciate of ‘Hygge’. You need to balance the modern world with nature, and balance also your own like. A balanced and colourful diet is very important to them as well as finding time for themselves, and of course time to exercise. It is all tied in together - makeup, diet, exercise, inner wellbeing, in helping them to feel like the best versions of themselves. With all the uncertainties right now with the coronavirus pandemic, we could all do with taking a leaf out of the Scandinavians book, and look at enjoying the smaller things in life and taking a more balanced approach. The next time you make a beauty purchase, why not try S-Beauty, and look for better ingredients, a more natural approach and see if it is an all rounder that can do more. |
